CHAPTER NINETEEN

Larry had called me to inform me that Chang had left the embassy. Patrick was about fifty yards north of me on West 31st Street. I waited, hoping Chang would not stop for dinner at the front of the building known as The Epic. The Epic stood fifty-nine stories high. A modern green building they called themselves. Half the building was offices with four hundred rental units on the upper half. Two blocks away was Penn Station, and the Manhattan Mall was across the street.

About forty minutes went by when a black Mercedes S560 approached the front of the building. An Asian man stepped out of the car. Before he closed the door, he spoke to the driver. As he walked toward the front of the building, I approached him.

“Mr. Chang, may I speak with you a moment?”

He was startled, looked up, and stepped back a few feet. “Who are you?”

“My name is Joey Mancuso. My wife is FBI Special Agent Martinez.”

“What do you want?” He asked, as the doorman stepped outside and looked at us.

“I’m investigating the murder of Dragos Vasile,” I replied. I glanced at the doorman who had begun walking toward us.

Chang waived to the doorman as if saying is alright. He waited for the doorman to get back into the building. “Should I know who that is?” He asked.

I didn’t want to play twenty questions with Chang. If he were a spy, he pretty well would know who all the players were in this little charade. “Let me get to the point,” I said. “You, Major Stanton, Captain Garcia, and Vasile were together in Afghanistan when Stanton was shot and killed by Vasile. Furthermore, Stevanka Antonescu was seen entering your car at Washington Square Park moments after Dragos Vasile was shot to death.”

He looked around, smiled, moved closer to me, and said in a low voice, “I’ve heard of you and your brother. You guys are like pit bulls when you get a hold of a bone. You don’t know when to let go.”

“It’s my wife who’s been charged with a double homicide. I ain’t letting go of the bone,” I said firmly. “She’s not going down for this.”

“You’re out of your league here, private detective. People are dying around this investigation. You need to take a step back.”

“Are you threatening me, sir?”

“Not at all. I’m just a bystander watching things happen.”

“I don’t think you’re simply a bystander. What’s going to happen in court when we reveal that Antonescu left in your car after assassinating Vasile?”

“All the park’s cameras were malfunctioning that day. So, I doubt you have evidence of that. Besides, I have diplomatic immunity.”

“Then you should be at court when we display photographs from a witness that show precisely what I’m talking about. As to your immunity, perhaps, you won’t have to testify or be charged. But, for sure, you’ll get your ass kicked out of the US.”

His arrogant grin became a frown at the mention of photographs. However, he said nothing.

I made
